Sinkstation: The Award-Winning Flat Colander Innovation
The Project Overview
Sinkstation is a revolutionary flat colander designed to maximize kitchen efficiency while minimizing storage space. Placed directly at the base of the sink, it serves as a hygienic platform to catch peelings and food waste, preventing plughole blockages and simplifying meal prep.
The Challenge: Solving the "Soggy Sink" Problem
The idea for Sinkstation was born from a common kitchen frustration. After a long evening of cooking, Damon Meredith found himself scooping sodden vegetable peelings out of a blocked sink. When he searched for a sink waste catcher that didn't take up bulky cupboard space, he realized a gap existed in the global housewares market.
The Innovate Solution: Professional Product Visualization
Damon partnered with Innovate Design to transform his frustration into a market-ready invention. The development process included:
Comprehensive Patent Search: Before investing in design, we mapped the existing IP landscape to ensure the Sinkstation was a unique, protectable concept.
Concept Iteration: Our designers took Damon’s initial sketches and developed multiple iterations to find the perfect balance of form and drainage function.
Photorealistic CAD Modeling: We created high-fidelity 3D renders that allowed Damon to pitch his idea to global distributors before a single unit was manufactured.
"The CAD images made my product exist virtually... You aren't just showing a biro drawing on an A4 piece of paper; you give them a 3D realistic design. It really helped move things along." — Damon Meredith
The Process: A Roadmap to Global Distribution
With Innovate’s strategic guidance, Damon successfully navigated the invention lifecycle:
IP Protection: Secured the best form of intellectual property protection for the UK and US markets.
Design Development: Refined the product using professional software to ensure it was "industry-ready."
Market Strategy: Identified the most effective routes to market and prepared for potential manufacturing obstacles.
The Results: From Prototype to Global Retailer
Since its launch, Sinkstation has become a massive commercial success. It is now distributed worldwide and stocked by major retailers, including:
John Lewis
Lakeland
Robert Dyas
Port-Style
By turning a simple kitchen chore into a sleek, award-winning solution, Damon Meredith has proven that a well-executed design can redefine a household category.
