The Searby Hedge Layer is a patented tractor attachment designed to create stock-proof hedges, providing a nature-friendly alternative to fencing. It helps maintain hedges while supporting shelter for animals and birds, contributing positively to agricultural land management.
The Challenge
Stewart and Barbara Searby, the inventors of the Searby Hedge Layer, identified a need for a more efficient, sustainable solution to eliminate traditional fencing while enhancing the natural landscape. Their goal was to develop a practical hedge-laying tool that could seamlessly integrate into farming practices. However, finding the time to turn a farmyard invention into a professionally designed product was a significant challenge.
The Solution – Innovate's Role
With Innovate's support, Stewart and Barbara were able to refine the Searby Hedge Layer into a professionally designed product, ready to approach manufacturers with confidence. The journey began with a thorough patent search conducted by Innovate, which not only ensured the uniqueness of the product but also laid the foundation for drafting a strong patent. This initial step was crucial in protecting the invention and guided the design process. Innovate supplied the inventors with a patent specification, which they filed 31 October 2019. It became a granted patent on 21 April 2023. Innovate’s expertise helped transform a farmyard creation into a market-ready product, fully equipped for manufacturing and commercial success.
Manufacturing Journey
After approaching several manufacturers, Stewart secured a partnership with a professional manufacturer introduced by his silage contractor. The manufacturer spent time onsite, testing the prototype and gaining a deep understanding of its functionality. Impressed by the Searby Hedge Layer’s capabilities, they agreed to produce three bright red units, each equipped with patent plates and based on Innovate’s drawings. This milestone marked a significant leap forward in bringing the Searby Hedge Layer to market.
Recognition and Validation
As part of their project, they successfully claimed the hedge laying grant and laid three miles of stock-proof hedges using the Searby Hedge Layer. DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) conducted an inspection of the completed work and were highly impressed by the results. Their positive feedback not only validated their product’s effectiveness in creating sustainable, stock-proof hedges but also underscored its potential impact on environmentally friendly farming practices.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Stewart and Barbara envision his hedge-laying machines being used widely across the countryside. With the product now in production, the goal is to see the Searby Hedge Layer contributing to more sustainable farming practices across the UK.
