How to develop an App

These steps take you through
the main stages from prototyping to launch, starting with an app prototype.

Step 1 - App Prototype

The first step on your journey is to take your concept on the right path and build an MVP (Minimum Viable Platform) working prototype of your app.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

Low-fi prototypes offer a simplified representation of the app's structure, focusing on core layout and functionality. With basic shapes and minimal text, they omit high-res images and detailed colors. The emphasis is on rapid ideation, allowing for quick iteration and feedback.

Mid-Fidelity Prototype

This type of wireframe improves significantly on the low-fi model. While it
still omits specific high-level details such as exact images, it now adds more refinement.

A mid-fi wireframe will contain varying text weights and proper content spacing. Designers still use only white and black here but express colour variation with shades of grey.

High-Fidelity Prototype

High-fi wireframes are the most detailed pixel-specific type of wireframes available. They use final copies, text hierarchy, hover states, and other UI elements to represent everything going into the final design.

Step 2 - Create Prototype

With your concept on the right path, owe can create the prototype. Moving beyond the initial idea, we shape a tangible representation of your app's core structure and functionality.

How to make money from an app or website

There are many ways you can make money from an app, some of the most important ones are listed below. We can help you decide which way to try making money first and optimise your app for this.

platform

Platform model

Lots of users!

With the platform model, you can make money by growing a large group of regular users of your app and selling advertising space within the app. You will need lots of regular users so access is often given free. You can also make money by selling data about your users.

Examples: Facebook, LinkedIn

subscription

Subscription model

Regular payments

The subscription model often offers a free trial for users to try the app then charges a monthly or annual payment. This helps users decide whether they want the app and it's great for you because it provides a regular revenue stream that can fund improvements.

Examples: Netflix, Spotify

paid

Paid app model

One-off payment

With a paid-for app, users are required to pay upfront to use the app. Great if they do, but often the paywall reduces the number of customers. Apps that successfully charge upfront often have a strong brand which users trust to deliver good products.

Example: Minecraft, Risk Online

freemium

Freemium model

Free, sort of

In the freemium model, the app is free but users can pay for additional products or features. This can give users a chance to start using the app and pay only for the additional things they want.

Examples: Clash of Clans, Just Eat.

sell

Sell your app

Make an exit strategy

Once you have an app making money using one or more of the above methods you can explore an exit strategy where you can sell your app to another company and start work on your next creative project.

patent

What about patents?

Can you patent an app?

In the UK apps can be tricky to patent however there are other ways to protect your app. The best thing you can do is develop your app fast, and use a portion of your profits to keep improving it to out-innovate your competitors.
