Inventions on the rise during the recession?

September 17th, 2012

A recent BBC article (Inventions and inventors rising in recession-hit UK, 31st August 2012) claims that Britons have risen to the economic challenges of recent recession by becoming more prolific inventors.

A survey of 2,000 respondents, commissioned by the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair, showed that there was an increase in activities surrounding the study of science and technology, coming up with inventions, developing money-saving solutions and even researching into or applying for a patent.

Managing Director at Innovate Design, Alastair Swanwick agrees with these findings. “Over the last few years we have seen a marked increase in the number of people enquiring about developing their invention ideas or wanting to find out how to protect their ideas. Many clients have decided to turn the situation of a job loss or redundancy into something positive by taking the time out to develop an idea they have been harbouring for a while. Through hard work and passion they have been rewarded with the sense of achievement which comes with running and owning their own business. Television programmes such as Dragons’ Den have also inspired people to give it a go, men and women, young and old, if you have a great idea then anyone can develop an invention and turn it into a success.”
